I have my freshmen do journals, too, mainly for in-class exercises, and one of my students wrote an entry in French, I guess thinking I couldn't read it. It was all about how sad she is, and how she doesn't have any friends and people don't like her. It was pretty sad, too.
I got picked on a lot when I was in middle school. But I think it made me a stronger person, not to mention I learned a lot about the superficial nature of people when I got contacts over the summer, and when school started back everyone treated me totally differently.
Matt - In 9th grade, I had to get new lenses for my glasses, and since I wasn't getting new frames, I had to go a few days w/o my glasses (and w/o being able to see...). This was before Lake City got a 1 hr optical place, obviously. Anyway, I remember that when I got my glasses back, a guy in my PE class said to me, "Oh, I thought you'd gotten contacts. You looked so hot without your glasses." Oh, what a blow at that age!
Glenn - If my Freshman English 101 professor had asked me to submit journals, they would have been unbelievably depressing. Just ask Melissa - she was the recioient of most of the utterly depressing crap I wrote back then.
